It’s not like our moms let’s us wear crop tops and mini-skirts without an epic battle that usually ended in defeat… So we dreamed of a time when we would be independent and finally wear whatever we wanted.
Yet, now that we have the freedom, the banging physique of our dreams is a thing of the past.
If it’s not stretched out skin and an annoying pooch from having babies, it’s just that belly fat or arm fat that makes you look like an over-stuffed potato in pictures.
I totally get it.
I look back at my life and how far I’ve come and I’m thankful I was the fat kid back in secondary school. Now, of all the girls with enviable physiques back then, about 85% of them are fatter than I was back in the day. Almost like I had the last laugh!
Were you the slim-fit diva back in high school who ended up fat in your 20’s?
It’s such a shame to see all those washboard abs and hourglass physiques hide under layers of fat now that we need them the most. Which is why I’ve decided to share my top 7 reasons you’re gaining weight in your 20’s.
Here they are:
1. Independence.
Your new found independence is hurting your waist line more than you think! You suddenly feel like a prisoner set free from bondage and you think it’s time to live it up!! You hang out anywhere, anytime and with whomever you please. There’s nobody telling you to watch your portions or work out 5 days a week. The end result: fat gain.
2. You’re winging your health.
You are not taking your health seriously. In your mind, you’re still the 16-year old who could eat an entire cake before midnight six days a week and not gain a pound. You’ve failed to realize that those days are long gone. Now, you actually have to earn a banging physique. As you age, your body is no longer as efficient as it was at burning fat, so you start gaining weight gradually over time if you don’t pay more attention to your body.
3. You’re a serial dieter.
Okay, now you know you’ve gained a ton of fat, so what do you do? You decide to go on a fad diet in an attempt to shed fat fast, completely ignoring exercise. Six weeks later, you’ve managed to lose some weight and so you happily revert back to your old ways of eating not-so-great-for-you meals. Twelve weeks later, you realize you’re bigger than you were before you embarked on the diet and so you go on another diet….. the cycle goes on and on and on.
4. Stress, Stress and more Stress.
Between taking care of a young family (if you have one) and trying to get ahead in your career and life or starting a business… A lot is going on right now that can send your stress (and fat) levels shooting to the sky.
5. You Hate Exercise.
I get it, not everybody enjoys working their bodies till it’s completely beaten down and out of breath. The good news is, you don’t. Not all workouts have to be mean before you reap the benefits of exercise for health. Of course, if you have higher aspirations you’d have to put in the work. But for now, a 30 mins walk on most days of the week and a brief strength training session two times a week is enough to get you healthy and decently fit.
6. You’re a cheapie.
There’s a new health program out that can help you shed some weight and get you fit, but you’ve refused to make the investment because you can’t rationalize paying any amount of money for health or fitness advice/coaching. You’d rather pick brains or figure it out on your own for years before finally giving up on your dreams of ever getting fit.
7. You’re obsessed with getting thin not healthy.
Personally, I would rather be thick and strong than skinny and weak. When you’re focused on getting stronger and healthier, leaner automatically follows. The obsessive need to get skinny doesn’t come from a place of love but rather, from a place of discontent, dissatisfaction and even hate.
Getting leaner and stronger takes time and effort. When you hate something, (your body) you’re anything but patient with it. And when results don’t come as quickly as you hoped, the hate and desperation grows, setting the stage for disordered eating and in worst cases, eating disorders (confusing right? The whole disordered eating and eating disorder thing… hahahahaha).
There you have it guys! 7 reasons why you’re gaining weight in your 20’s. Did any of these resonate with you? Are there more reasons you’d like to share? The page is open.
xoxo....Jenn.
