In Nigeria, where I come from, only one healthcare profession actually exists - The Doctors
At first, I struggled with identifying myself as health coach because I felt most people wouldn't take my expertise seriously.
I could see it in their eyes and I could hear it in their voices when they asked..."A health coach huh? What exactly does a health coach do?"
Stay with me as I attempt to answer this burning question.....

Who is a Health Coach?
A health coach is a multidisciplinary professional trained to guide you on how to eat, exercise and live a healthy, wholesome life.
Eat? Exercise? Live a wholesome life? These are all so basic! Why would anyone build a full-time career around teaching people to eat and exercise?
I'll tell you why....
Even though, eating, sleeping and living are mundane and relatively unexciting activities, there's absolutely no denying that they kinda make up about a 100% of being alive. A whooping 100%.
Most chronic illness are the end result of not eating the right way, sleeping the right way and living the right way.
Not so mundane now, is it? You see, It's the little things we do everyday that significantly influence our health and the quality of our lives.
Now, the doctors neither have the time nor the training to guide anyone through the tumultuous waters of behavior change, neither do the dietitians, the physio's, nurses and even diabetes educators (most of em').
That's the job of a certified health / wellness coach.
We teach people how to change destructive behavior and adopt beneficial ones helping them manage or keep lifestyle diseases at bay.
In essence, a health coach is a prevention and transformation expert.
Health coaches are an integral part of the healthcare continuum, offering preventive care and saving millions in medical bills.
Health coaches also make the jobs of all other healthcare professionals considerably easier by providing the tools and strategies that help patients stick with medical therapy. Most health coaches have a solid background in exercise physiology, nutrition, behavior change, medical sciences and counselling.
When Should I book an Appointment with a Health Coach?
My unbiased response is ANYTIME!!!!
Since health coaches are prevention experts, they're just the people to see when you have no disease symptoms and want things to stay that way.
You also meet with a health coach after you've received a disease diagnosis. A holistic health coach will work with your doctors recommendations to drastically improve the quality of your life and manage disease progression.
In fact, a health coach is the person to meet when you want to embark on a lifestyle change or begin a weight loss program or learn to eat better, or need healthy recipes..... A health coach answers all your " How can I achieve the best health of my life? " questions.
How exactly does a health coach help me achieve my healthiest life?
One thing you should know about the health coaching industry - it is an industry motivated by passion. That is, 98% of health coaches aren't in the business for prestige or millions of dollars (that tends to comes if you do things right but isn't the motivation).
There is no greater joy for a health coach than seeing a client leave better than they came in. In fact, some health coaches are so awesome that their clients never let them go even after their job is done.
Most health coaches prefer to work one-on-one with their clients, while some others build relationships with their clients through online programs, workshops and podcasts.
True health coaches are compassionate, mission-driven individuals that are inspirational in a way that's not intimidating.
